The purpose of this site
I am ware that a lot of people want to become a train driver and use the role of a conductor as stepping stone to get a driver job. In fact the best route to the trainee train driver job is to get employed on the railways in another grade. Any of the following grades: shunter, dispatcher, customer host, customer service ambassador, and gateline can help you land a train driver job.
External candidates, On the other hand have a slim chance of getting a trainee driver job. For instance a TOC recently advertised on their website for trainee train drivers for their depots in Scotland; they had more than 12,000 applicants, for around 12 positions!. Original, they wanted 30 trainees. After internal recruitment they were down to 12. So they released the 12 posts to the general public.
